Final Blog

Journalism 2

In the past quarter I have learned many new things of journalism. Although I already had a understanding of just how manipulating media can be, this class showed specific ways in which it is. It also gave me a clear understanding of the fist amendment and to what degree it protects citizens which is largely misconstrued by media itself.

This video is a trailer for the documentary Miss Representation. The documentary focuses on how much media affects our view of women. It reveals that the domestic view of women, the inferiority and hyper -sexualization all has comes from medias output.

The Fappening Privacy Case
Earlier this year a huge controversy occurred when a hacker invaded the privacy of hundreds of celebrities by leaking explicit pictures taken from their phones, online. These pictures quickly made their way to Google and although the tech giant was threatened to be sued by a multitude of people if the pictures were not taken down in time, they kept them up. This became a legal case due to the fact that the company knowingly kept up illegally obtained material.

       -This academic journal focuses on how the advertisements for antidepressants drugs are approved by the FDA, yet often misinform people. These ads make generalizations that mislead the consumers into what type of medication they are inferring about and how it works.

      -This is a study on how antidepressants advertisements affect those who have depression and seek help. It focuses on how these people believe the advertisements affect them. The results are as expected, the depressed people believe that these advertisements have less of an effect then they actually do.

      -This article focuses on how direct to consumer advertising directly contributes to the over-prescribing and mis-prescribing of antidepressants. It takes a history of how it began with Prozac, which due to its lessening side effects created an ideal drug that was sought out by many. It goes on to speak on the history of such things further revealing the troubled history of these medicines.

Propaganda Techniques

1.Beautiful People-This add uses the celebrity Adam Levine smiling in order to persuade the consumer into believing that not only will they be just like this celebrity, but that they will also be happy and beautiful.
2.Intentional Vagueness- This add doesn't actually say how its taking care of your skin, but simply that is it is doing so fantastically.














1.  Demonizing the Opponent- This ad doesn't even address the actual product its selling it only tells the audience that the enemy (PC) is a bad and not worth the persons time.
2. Repetition- This add heavily reinforces the belief that PC has had consistent problems by actually repeating the scene multiple times in a thirty second ad.

Research Topics

How does TV serve "They"?
A recent discovery I made which is incredibly interesting to me is how and who advertising laws serve "they". This became of interest to me when  I found out that only in New Zealand and the USA is it allowed for pharmaceuticals to be advertised. This should come as shocking to most people as medication for depression and other illnesses have no place on TV, as patients have no business suggesting to their doctors what medications they want to take because they saw a fancy advertisement for it.

Gaming is the New Media
Video games have come a long way from an individual experience at home. By incorporating the internet and social media, gaming has now become a dominant force in media. It has even given rise to a new form of celebrities through star gamers. These people play in competitions and stream their experiences in games becoming icons and inspiration for other gamers. This new form of media is definitely one to look out for.

Movies

My favorite movie of the year was X-men Days: of Future Past. This movie was amazing due to the incredible effects and CGI used. Due to theater viewing the action sequences in the movie encapsulated my attention. I am a huge fan of the X-men empire and well the movies produced roughly ten to fifteen years ago were great, the advancement in CGI and other film effects has undoubtedly increased the quality of movies capable of being made.

My favorite movie of all time would be Pulp Fiction. I watched it a few years ago as a recommendation form my brother. Its non-linear plot, interwoven stories and masterful shooting by Tarantino creates an eerily real depiction of gritty crime driven lives.

Name of magazine: Cinephilia Monthly
Concept: The magazine is about all things films, from their inception to post production. There is not really another magazine in circulation that does the same thing.
Readers: Film students, cinephiles and movie enthusiasts alike will enjoy this magazine. The age can range widely as with ethnicity. I feel it will be skewed towards males who are upper middle or upper class.
