Media and Me Autobiography
Media is an inescapable form of information being communicated. Seven of the eight types listed below are integral for me to function through my day to day activities. Like many people my age, I am heavily dependent on current technology which greatly dictates the mediums I experience.
- Books: Since I was young, books have only played a role in academics, bringing to light themes and pivotal information used in school activities.
- Newspapers/News: The newspaper is my medium of local news, I read the Mercury News and Santa Clara weekly in order to maintain current knowledge of my city and locals. I do not watch the news as I do not watch TV.
- Magazines: I've never cared to read magazines.
- Movies: As a medium, movies have always been an integral part of my life. I frequent the theaters and watch one at home nearly every other day. They serve not only as entertainment, but as artistic inspiration and showcase themes in ways more pleasing to me than novels.
- Audio & Radio: These two mediums go hand in hand for me since I received my first Ipod at age 11. At any point in the day, I have music playing from my iTunes library or from my Pandora Radio stations. Music seems to be the most integral part of media for me as it’s a form of mass communication that connects to me on a personal level.
- Television: As a child I was glued to the television whether it be for the shows or video games. In recent years I rarely watch TV, and now rely on my laptop.
- Internet: The internet of course is the most pivotal medium for me. On my phone and my laptop I have instant access. I use it to stay informed on my friends on Facebook. I use my news apps to keep track on the latest tech advances. I am consistently on the internet effectively wasting time or informing myself on countless subjects.
My major is cognitive science, I plan to get my bachelor of science at UC Santa Cruz. Directly related to media, the practice tends to use social media for research based studies. People with this degree are also becoming a common part of startup companies as their knowledge allows them to help figure how to appeal to the masses. This is a career that I myself, am greatly interested in pursuing.
I learned cognitive science is used by companies to figure out how to appeal to masses. Its interesting how you read the newspaper on a regular basis, for some reason I feel it has become less common in recent years, at least in the bay area.
ReplyDeleteI really agree with your statement of music reaching you on a personal level, there are so many types of genres for all types of moods. Music definitely reaches me on a personal level as well. Cognitive science is an interesting field, definitely will need this as a company.
ReplyDeleteWell done! I also feel that without almost all of the medium above most people wouldn't be able to cope with their day to day life without technology. Im also an iChild and was given my first iPod at 11 (insert high5 here). Theres nothing like some awesome jams to make the day a little more vibrant.
ReplyDeleteI like to read books, novels in specific. I have this habit since I was a kid. By reading novels, my imagination improved a lot. I am now trying to write a novel, my goal is I can finish my first novel before I turn 25.
ReplyDeleteI never knew what "cognitive science" meant before. It sounds similar to marketing, but more scientific.
